Saturday was a windy, blustery kind of day

Saturday was a windy, blustery kind of day. I am taking care of jenny-dog (a beautiful and very happy, energetic collie-newfoundland cross) while my parents are out of province visiting my father's sister. We (Tracie, Jenny-dog and I) had a romping adventure through the river valley from McKernan to the Old Strathcona farmer's market in the morning.
I replenished my stock of tasty kim-chee and picked up some greens for supper and walking home I was all excited to go to the 2:30PM talk (so I thought) led by Ian Mulder an Edmonton based artist. I left jenny-dog with a cuddle and walked up to the UofA , after forgetting the path through the construction which seems a permanent part of campus I arrived to find I was so late that the session was almost over because it was actually a 2:00PM session. I was just in time however on the tail end to see some beautiful graffiti shots gathered from around the world.
It was a conference session called Activist, Citizen and Street Art and the wee bit I listened to was about people actively living and changing the world immediately around them. As Mr. Mulder says, public space and public art are often necessarily liability-driven, not biting the hand that feeds you, or gives the arts grant reason to carry on and carry out your artistic vision.
Or not. Public art is layered in motivations and methods. The artist is most often anonymous even when it is a mainstream sponsored piece. And definitely so in the darker, shadowy side of street art where the artist may only be infamous.
For me, street art is often like an information directory of who lives where, what they are curious and interested in and what they want you to know about them. Sometimes that message is "I'm bored." Sometimes it's High Pride and sometimes it is pain and questioning. In public art, as Mr. Mulder says, you have to open to it being bad, or beautiful, or ugly. I agree because the point is that it is there and in telling the world.
So,if esteem and recognition may not be the key factors for activist art the importance I think lies in the action wanted from the audience. The act of engaging is by itself very political and the Power of Art is in our ability to influence what our space looks like and this can be a citizen act. This can take many forms from community planted parks like in McKernan to spray painted stencil art or community murals. Though look further next time you go past an act of citizenry and consider the message, energy, thought and preparation that went into it to complete the relative quick process of its actualization.

RE: [Just mentioning] Trying for More Communication

my sister writes:

What the fuck with the white belgian beer! What'd I miss? THAT's not FAIR!

well. . .
it was white and i thought it was from away. . .

i goofed on that one?
anyways it was good wherever it was from. . .

though i had even more reason to be thankful this weekend past despite it not even being an official day. my dear sister (soul not blood) kim came for a visit and we were treated to a yummy chinese meal and a receital of belly dancing.
It was a fundraiser for a group in Edmonton called Action For Healthy Communities. There was a cake auction and i tried (really really tried) to bid on a Walnut Chiffon cake which looked delicious.
However other people were quicker and the price tag quickly rose to higher than i was willing to go. The happy news is that one of the organizers was a fellow who i knew from my job at the hardware store and it was his mother who baked the cake. He did make a promise of a recipe and i will be following that one to a hopefully tasty end. . . .ending in my stomach that is.

Trying for More Communication

Just in case i haven't told you yet. . .]
I am now CARFree
tra la la it is a carefree life to be CARfree!

edmonton is lovely this autumn season
thanksgiving was full of tasty treats and reminders of how much i really have to be thank-full for. . .
like tasty treats and the ability to make the good decision to become car free.

I worked alot over the weekend though thankfully had saturday off when i could celebrate and sup with my family. A good meal and topped with white belgian beer. and preceded by a trip to the national cross cycling champion racing in Argyll Park. Wow! Peak performances must start training. . . should only take me ten years.

i am steadily fixing my bikes into perfecto condition and trying to become handy with them. Perhaps a nice side effect of this biking habit will be to "fix" my body into perfecto condition as well.
i keep wondering how long i will dare to ride into the cold and ice season- it may be a decision of courage or of common sense i am not sure yet but i'll keep you posted.

I am off to spent the eveing a bike garage and should finish the evening with a next to new bike. Wish me luck!

My Philosophy of Life –or the Six underlying components for how I live!

Anything worth doing is worth playing at-all play is good not all play is the same. In every moment and experience you need to connect with its essential meaning and spirit which maybe serious, sacred, light, nonsense or all of those together. Be curious and interested in the people of the world around you. Wherever I am, I must BE MYSELF, remember that to be myself may mean being different or the same as others. I smile – feel relieved when I know the people I care about are doing okay. Money is a necessary tool in the world now, to be used with consideration and caution so it does not overwhelm the life.

AND REMEMBER TO BREATHE for as long as possible!!!

My mantra of simple living. . .in my life there are goods and bads, there are lows and highs, there are the utterances of sweet delight and tearing whimpers of sadness there just is it is enough to slow down and realize that life is no where but here and I am only who I am.

My becoming is inevitable but not real.

There are moments there are seconds that are there and then gone and there are sweet troubles that go on forever and you must be only glad that you have them- that you are lucky enough to gather up only such small ones.

there is in life a sweetness of not working a 8-4 rotation from hell. this is peak productivity time why give it up to someone else in exchange  for no time in the morning to coming home exhausted to only want to chill and no time for life.

i was away this weekend out of city, into the bush, swimming inthe river and listening to music on grass. so nice.
my life is small and precious and beautiful, i am awed by simple things as it should be. . .

there are simple joys in life which are the best. . .

we are animals and emotional and sensitive -affected to the core by the environments -physical, social, and cultural within which we live our daily lives.
